The Flood's - Yearbook Staff Chilocco Indian School

Yearbook Staff Chilocco Indian SchoolYEARBOOK STAFF CHILOCCO INDIAN SCHOOL, 1955

DONNA COLLEEN JONES FLOOD, Lower left-hand corner.

Chilocco Indian School will be forever etched into the minds of great numbers of Native Americans who received their high school, vocational and junior college at Arkansas City, Kansas while on working scholarship at Chilocco.

Each student will have their own special memories particular to their own life there. As a student my memories are golden and precious. It was a place where there was freedom from prejudice, crime, financial worries, and fear of failure. No matter what one's particular talent was it seemed to be sought out and polished.

We were as close as brother and sisters. There was time for acquaintances to be made that resulted in marriages and life long relationships. Children of those marriages in turn came to Chilocco for their own education.

Many trades were offered. My own studies centered around journalism and home economics.

If one must analyze the good of the thing as opposed to the negative this becomes most difficult. However, if I were to need to send my children to such a school I would be most reluctant to do so. It has been impossible for me to relate to my children's teenage problems, since I had none.
