Dr Winifred Rushforth OBE |
During his brief visit to Edinburgh recently the Prince of
Wales took time out to unveil a memorial to the late Winifred Rushforth OBE. Winifred
Rushforth was born in West Lothian in 1885 and educated at Edinburgh Ladies College in
Queen Street before completing Medical Studies at Edinburgh Medical College and then
graduating MB ChB from the University in 1908.
On graduating she set sail for India where she later met her husband and where she was to
spend the best part of the next 20 years. She became very interested in psychology and on
retiring from India set up a private practice in Edinburgh in 1929. In 1939 she
established the Davidson Clinic which continued to thrive in various Edinburgh locations
for the next 35 years. In 1978 Winifred, now 93, was instrumental in setting up the
Wellspring as a successor to the Davidson Clinic.
In 1980 Winifred Rushforth turned her hand to writing, publishing her first book on
Psychology and her autobiography, Ten Decades of Happenings. This tireless and
enigmatic woman was drawn to Prince Charles' attention by Sir Laurens van der Post who
arranged for the Prince to meet her. The Prince of Wales dedicated a statue to her
named, "The Dreamer." |
