Ethel Mary Steuart, MA, DLitt.


Ethel Mary Steuart, MA, DLitt. (d.1960)

Only daughter of John A. Stewart, a founder-member of The Stewart Society. She won a Clothworkers' Scholarship to North London Collegiate School and became a Foundation Scholar of Girton College, Cambridge, where she also gained the Gamble Prize and a Research Studentship. Research work in Paris and the British School of Archaeology in Rome. Gained First Class in both parts of Classical Tripos; graduate of London University with First Class Honours. Many other distinctions and awards.

She was headmistress of  Bootle High School for Girls, Liverpool; Assistant Lecturer in Latin at University College, Cardiff and Lecturer in Latin at the University of Edinburgh. Author of learned works including The Annals of Quintus Ennius (1925); contributor to Classical Review, Classical Quarterly, the American Journal of Philology, etc.
