Duncan McQuage/McQuaig/McQuagge
born ca 1765 came with his wife, 3 sons, and daughter from North Carolina
to the Euchee Valley Scottish settlement southeast of what is now DeFuniak
Springs in Walton County, FL in the early 1820's. Census records show him
in the 1820 Census of Conecuh County, Alabama as Duncan McQuaig; in the
1821 Census of West Florida as Duncan McQuagge; and finally in the 1830
Walton County Florida Census as Duncan McQuagg. He was issued a land
patent on May 15, 1829 in Walton County for 80 acres in Section 12, T2N,
R18W as Duncan McQuaig. A large number of patent deeds were issued on this
date so he probably occupied this land for many years before this date.
There are previous records such as the 1779 Richmond County NC Census
tax list with Duncan & John McQuague; the 1790 Federal Census of Richmond
County, NC with Malcom, Peter, and Duncan McQuig (over age 16 and with a
wife); a December 1795 Richmond County Petition for Military Organization
as Dunkin McQuag (Line 5); a December 13, 1799 list of "persons who took
an oath that they were prevented from voting for Duncan McFARLAND in an
election in said county where alligations of impropriety were raised"
(#59) as Duncan McQuage; the 1799 List of Voters for Richmond County NC
for Senate (#54) as Duncan McQuagne; an 1800 Petition of Inhabitants of
Anson County, North Carolina as Dunkin McQuag (X on Line 6); the Anson
County, NC Census' of 1800 as McUage and of 1810 as McQuague; and the
Anson County 1815 Tax List (Capt. Smith's Company) as Duncan McQuage
showing the ownership of 226 acres valued at $400.
"In 1806 families of Scottish origins organized a Presbyterian Church in
Anson County, NC and family names of participants were McRae, McLeod,
Campbell, McQuagg, McLouchlin, McKay, McPherson, McKinsie, McClennon. Land
for the church and cemetery was purchased in 1806. In 1816, Duncan
McQuague sold 226 acres on Long Branch of Jones Creek in Anson County for
$350.00."
It is not certain whether any of these recorded entries with slightly
different surname spellings are the same Duncan, but they appear to be the
same man. We are still searching for information on his
parents/grandparents and exactly when and where he came from in Scotland.
