Robert Hope Moncrieff – alias ‘Ascott’ R. H. Moncrieff was born on the 26th of February, 1846 at 11 Hart Street, Edinburgh, Scotland, to George Moncrieff (Solicitor), born 1817 in Perth, Scotland, and Angela Birch, born c. 1822 in England.

Robert’s father, George, was one of eight children (5 girls and 3 boys) born to Robert Hope Moncrieff (Snr.) and Isabella Aitken in Perth between 1811 and 1827.

George and Angela had two other children, namely, John F Moncrieff born on the 5th of July, 1847 in Perth and Angela M Moncrieff born on the 27th of November, 1848, also in Perth. But as can be seen in an abreviated transcription of the 1851 Census for Perth, George is a widower, with the children being looked after by his sister-in-law Henrietta Bell and the family servants.

As Robert writes in 1914 within a summary autobiography on page 5 of ‘A Book About Authors’ (13 pages of which follow below) … “My mother died before I knew her [pre-1851], my father also was taken too soon, [1865] leaving me precociously independent.”

Father George re-married a Maria Wilks Williamson Rogers and they had three children, George Henry in 1855, Francis Edward in 1857, and Henrietta in 1858.

But, by at least 1861, he was again a widower, as he married an Isabella Roy on the 16th of January, 1861. The household, [without Robert and John] in the 1861 Census was as follows:- George Moncrieff 43 ; Isabella Moncrieff 32 [Roy] ; Angela M Moncrieff

The two older boys, Robert (15) and John (13) were in Edinburgh in the 1861 Census at Circus Place School, 6 North East Circus Place, and were living with many others in the household of the Teacher of English / School Rector, Kilmarnock born William M. Begbie, and his wife Elizabeth.
