Okefenokee
“The land of trembling earth” when the Seminoles speak
Of the jungle that the wild inhabitants seek.
The trails left on this waterlogged land
In canoes traveling where the deep sand
Disappeared centuries ago
And are now mirrored in the dark flow
Reflections from this vast wilderness show
A symphonic rapture with the wind’s musical breeze
Glorified in a natural reflection that will tease
The most carnivorous of animals shown
In this vast wilderness and colorful tone
Created upon its birth
In “The land of trembling earth.”
“The land of trembling earth” sends the spirits into the blue sky
Where the skulls of ancient tribesmen linger on high
And demons deal a harsh hand
Upon the soul of this marsh land
And they dwell upon their hallowed places,
Their bones marking the dead trees with faces,
Their ghosts dwell the stricken trail
Where gators and bears have dwelt before
Upon the trembling forest floor
And creation marveled at its birth
In “The land of trembling earth.” |
