| Saving on purchases of food |
| Today, February 10, 2008 an add was placed in the paper telling
one of the discount foods store had potatoes on sale, 1.88 for 10 pounds.
By watching the newspaper these adds can be quickly spotted. I
bought 30 pounds. Not all at once will I peel them, but concentrated energies will
go to peeling these in a large bowl of water and sprinkling
Fruit Fresh over them.
This will keep the potatoes from turning brown. Place them in a quart
size baggie with some of that water and freeze. When you need
potatoes for soup, frying, stir fry, there they are, all ready to go.
I always make a point to serve the foods the stores are closing out. This weekend it is potatoes and cucumbers.
The cucumbers are 3 for 1 dollar. The new potato crop will be coming on soon, so out with the old, in with the new!

| When at home in Scotland my mother used to visit the local garden centre and purchase leeks. They had been grown from seed in a tray so were still very small.
She then used the handle of the hoe to put down holes around 6 inches and then dropped one leek into each hole and when finished filled them with water.
They would grow away over winter and any time my mother wanted a leek for soup or something else she'd just go pick one or two.
They grew well even under snow. |
