| We're Still Country Here in Oklahoma |
We’re Still Country Here in Oklahoma
Although this house is a far cry from the cold
prairie home during winter blitzes, still there is a strange feeling
about the place. Something
about the strength of winter makes us want to shudder a bit even though
we aren’t really cold. A sweater, another layer of clothing and all is well isn’t it?
The children feel the strength of the storm and seem
to move a bit slower like someone looking over their shoulder just to
check if anyone is there who shouldn’t be.
“Guess what Gramma?” One of my grandchildren asks that loaded question.
“I can’t imagine.” My responses to this
question always has to vary in order to create a new and different
reply.
“We had a baby calf at the school, all day.” His matter of fact statement caught my attention.
“A baby calf? Someone doing show and
tell?” Now after my interest was caught he was satisfied to go on
with his story.
“No, the teacher’s cow had the calf in the pond and
it was partially frozen. She had to break ice to get it out.”
Now my vision of this literary person out in the
middle of icy waters brought a new respect for the people of our area.
"And I thought all the old pioneer spirit was dead. Shame on me!"
“Did the calf make it?” Now I was really interested.
“Oh yes!” It was his turn to have an attitude
of one with new wisdom he had and that I did not know.
“All right!” I praised his telling of the
story and was really thankful to see a part of the real world touching
into his classroom.
