 aromas of harvest

Today was a day that did not allow for a moment to spare.  I had children from two families to care for and a plumber coming to fix a problem in our home. The children were really well behaved, keeping themselves occupied in various ways.

As I was in the garage from time to time due to the door being open for the workers, I decided to take down some of the dried plants from last fall.  I had 2 bunches of basil and one bunch of mint.

With the children occupied, I sliced open a plastic bag so it could be used to cover the kitchen counter.  With the surface covered, the counter was soon covered with the dried leaves that I stripped off the branches.  The aroma was mouth watering as I thought of all the well seasoned Italian dishes I would make with the basil.

One of the workers had seen the bunches of dried plants but did not ask what they were until he could smell the aroma.  He said that it made the house smell very nice.  I explained to him what it was and how I would use it.

Next came the mint.  The scent of mint made my mouth water.  I make pots of decaffeinated tea into which I place large pinches of dried mint.  It makes such a delicious brew that no sweetener is needed.

When my husband came home, he saw the large labelled bags on the counter.  I opened each so he could 'take a whiff', smell the full aroma of the newly crushed leaves.

He loves his gardening and outside work.  His comment after sniffing the bags?  We will be planting more herbs in his garden this year!

Ott, I did not know you enjoyed growing herbs. When you come to the new Otoe enterprise, which I understand is now open, we will have to have fun visiting on this subject. By the way the Osages are in full swing with giant flares up on heir parking lot even though it is just temporary arrangement with buildings of a modular kind. I'm anxious to see what the real buildings will be like. This is only around a mile and 1/2 from us.
