Article  Reading to the First Grade Reading to the First Grade      Every once in a while we are gifted with anunexpected pleasant circumstance to create sweet memories. This is exactly what happened to me today. My granddaughter's  first grade teacher asked me to read some of my children's stories to her class; We are talking about children who are already seasoned prairie people. Their bright eyes and thoughtful observant ways told me how well they had already learned what was expected of them.  We read stories about coyotes, grasshoppers and wild flowers growing in the meadow; There was no question I could ask that was too difficutl; "What is the difference between a meadow and a pasture?; I asked. Immediately all hands went up and one child told me,  "You don't let the cows and horses on the meadow!" Concerning the coyotes one boy told me, "They are afraid of you and will run away if you happen upon one." Another boy said, "Yes but, they do kill calves! A little girl with long blond curls said, "I hear them out in the pasture at night. It sounds like there are a lot of them."; After we had read about the grasshopper and his, "chaw," there wasn't a comment until one boy said, "I fish with those thingsl I would say the few minutes with the children taught me. I felt as if this was a transporting back through time when we were children out on the prairie. Let me tell you, it was great fun, today and yesterday; but the best part had to be the sweet hugs and honest thank you's the children gave me as I was leaving. Only for a while were these children made aware that they possess> knowledge others did not have.; It gave them a new self-confidence, I believe.
