 The Games Soon Over
=August 18, 2008

The patter of rain drops outside my window are nice and conducive to my wishing to go to bed to sleep and not to dream.  This is good sleeping weather.  The day has been a rolling onward with chores upon chores.  There are more apples into applesauce and freezer.

The only thing to stop me from wallowing in self-pity because of aching muscles and stupefying closed down thinking ability is to sit back and watch the other women of my family as they struggle onward in their duties. One is caring for children’s children, grandchildren and one of her maternal origins.
Another in her youth struggles through the intricacies of a world thrown upon her for her child’s needs along with the very aged of that new family.  Another lets nothing trip her in the bid for loyalty at any price to a job she has maintained for many years.  Another will venture to a far away place to complete a small goal for education, leaving her child who cries for his mother.  Still another woman grapples with educating girls, caring for a child and political obscenities thrust upon them from the highest pinnacle, who make blanket decisions totally not effective for our  well-being.

Catching my eye to the side of my running are the Olympics and I watch as gold metal upon gold metal is awarded and I’m sinfully proud.  My only doubt is,
“When do we of the commoners get our reward?”   I watch as the contestants lounge about in the heated spa waters after cold dives and my mind knows, one more year has passed with medical bills making my daughter continually tight cerebral palsied muscles having to wait until we can clean up some of these bills  before we purchase a warm water spa for her.  Oh sure, there are government programs of  wellness centers with pools and such. Who can afford the gas to drive there and we won’t talk about the plain inconvenience of taking us away from necessary chores.  When we had the spa, it took maybe 30 minutes in all to care for that part of therapy. Driving to a spa can take up to one half a day. To do this driving as often as it needs be done would soon leave us in more poverty.

We’ve studied history to see the Egyptians build with great pragmatic efforts and that did work for a while to keep the people in control.   Today those monuments stand alone and haunted by the ghosts of their rulers; yet, we cannot or will not learn from history.  The simple, kind laws of the Christ whose teachings at the beginning of our country were our model,  have slipped away, again, it seems.  The care of the individual finds a substitution in the building and doing for some abstract  ideal of proving superiority through the games.  This didn’t work for Greece or Rome, either.  At this time, soon, the games will be over and nations will be left with the need to return once again to look for  real solutions, the one magnified by Christ, that of the individual helping the individual on a personal basis.

Fried Green Tomatoes

1 cup rye flour
3 green tomatoes
salt
3 Ttablespoons oil
1/4 cup water
spray for non-stick cooking

Spray large pan with non-stick cooking oil
Slice green tomatoes making the slices thick
Roll in the rye flour

As soon your skillet is very hot add the cooking
oil and sliced tomatoes.
Allow tomatoes to brown very well, turn them over
and allow them to brown some more on the other side.
Add the 1/4 cup water and place a tight lid on them so they will steam a few minutes to become tender.
Scripture:

Proverbs 2: 1, 2

My son, if you will receive my sayings and treasure up my own commandments with yourself, 2.  so as to pay attention to wisdom with your ear, that you may incline your heart to discernment; 3. if, morever; you call out for understanding itself and you give forth your voice for discernment itself.
