 aromas of harvest
Today was a day that did not allow for a moment to spare.  I had children from two families to care for and a plumber coming to fix a problem in our home. The children were really well behaved, keeping themselves occupied in various ways. As I was in the garage from time to time due to the door being open for the workers, I decided to take down some of the dried plants from last fall.  I had 2 bunches of basil and one bunch of mint. With the children occupied, I sliced open a...

 Bread, left over, using
One can save money by using even the stale bread.  This will eliminate the need to buy bread crumbs, stuffing crumbs, or croutons and eliminate having to use fresh bread for strata recipes or bread puddings.turn oven on to 300 degrees F Cut the crust from the slices Place on a rack in a sheet pan Place pan in oven. Turn off oven. Leave in oven and turn the bread slices after 5-10 minutes. watch carefully so the bread does not toast too dark. Open the oven door to lower the temp...

 butternut squash
My husband loves to plant 'things'.  It matters not what category it is in.  If it has roots or is a viable seed, give it to him and in the ground it goes. One of the favorites of the two of us is his vegetable garden.  He has learned from my desire for squash of any variety, that they are indeed a delicious vegetable.  Over the winter we have eaten quite a few of the butternut squash we kept from last years garden.I fix them in various ways, with the following being two of...

From the view of a 6 year old
As I sat reading my email, the six year old came to see what I was doing.  On seeing an orthopedic boot pictured in a post, she inquired what it was and what did the mail say.I told her that a friend had broken some bones in her foot after bumping it into something and had sent me a picture of the special orthopedic shoe she must now wear.On hearing that explanation, she said:  "Did she have her eyes closed?  That's how I bump into things."

 Micropopcorn, make your own
Use brown paper lunch bags.  Mix popcorn kernels in a tablespoon or more, as needed, of olive oil.  Place salt or any spices you prefer into the bag. Close the bag with a staple, (won't cause microwave problems) be certain to fold the top a couple times so the staple doesn't pop and the corn spill all over. Fold the sides and flatten the bag. Pop for 3-4 minutes or until popping gets sparse. Open, let steam escape, don't let staple get into the finished product... account...

 no knead yeast bread
The following recipe was received in a post sent to me.  I share it, having baked it in a 9 inch square pan.  It rose to the height of a corn bread but had all the baked consistency of a regular loaf of home baked yeast bread.  I used the whole wheat flour sweetened with honey.  I also added about 2 tablespoons of benefiber to increase the fiber in the recipe. The bread is hot on the table in approximately 2 hours from start time.  It is a bread I will definitely...

 Quick meal ingredients, diabetic
Upon learning on leapday that I am now numbered among those with diabetes, I have found that the properties of the things I eat are now changed.  For the most part, those left overs in the fridge are 'verboten'!   Such tasty things too, now that they are on the no no list. My take on the new life style is this: there are many things worse.  The old french song  "que cera, cera...what ever will be will be...the futures not ours to see...."  is now a reality. As a way...

 quick meal ingredients, diabetic part2
In posting the soup recipe in the post on meal ingredients, I forgot to mention that the protein in the soup meal was a precooked scrambled egg that I added to the soup after the soup was hot.  The egg was left over from the little ones breakfast.  Left over eggs are easily added to a variety of recipes to use them up.  I have had this soup with turkey and with chicken chuncks in it as well as with shrimp.Instead of adding the rice, or in addittion to the rice, a serving of...
