Dennis's ranch house had been opened for summer guests. Perfumed wild flowers off the meadow and prairie air ran through the rooms to relieve the musty odor of having been closed for so long. Fresh linens sprinkled with lavender water were on the beds, furniture was polished and dusted with sweet-smelling oil and the rugs were vacuumed with an early day invention that worked okay since the rugs were not thick pile, but spread out flat and close to the floor.

The Big V and the old 101 Ranch were ranches that were only a couple of miles from their mother's home place, where they were now living. People around them were of old time settlers, but some were farmers whose family went back several generations. Others were people, who had good jobs with Conoco oil.
There were people on welfare, too. Everyone in their world had a stable income. They had money for nice clothing, adequate nutrition, and, best of all, each family...
Late May winds were now whipping about the Strike Axe a year later. Often prairie gales were very cool at night, even in early summer. Velma was home from the hospital with her third child. The birth was difficult and had not gone well. Even though the woman was young and healthy, she had barely survived. This petite person was so thin and wan her own mother-in-law, Bell, almost did not recognize her. The blessing of the warmth of the month during the day did make life a bit more possible for...
September, 2009, last week-end, will be our memorial for Mother's death, one year later. She always camped on the North end of Standing Bear Park and this is where we will have our feast. All her friends are invited. Bring your own chairs and a covered dish.
I'm putting a series of short, small stories here on the frugal living page. Mother's whole life was one of careful, frugal living, which was partially from her Native American culture and from her Scotish-Irish, Mother-In-Law, Bellzona....
On a Saturday the Smith brothers were visiting them for the purpose of holding a Bible study. They were handsome young men. One was tall and dark with clean cut good looks. The other brother was shorter and looked a little like James Dean who played Jet Rink in the movie Giant. Both were unmarried and in their early twenties.
The young men were now standing at the door waiting for someone to invite them into the house. Lee went to the door and ushered them past the kitchen into the living...
Velma's own work gravitated around a more delicate preparation of food. Her family of the Ponca's had been farmers for generations. She was gifted with their knowledge, talent and understanding of being able to tie together all the elements of proper timing and weather, or any other small opportunity to allow for a successful crop.
The thinking woman planted rows of popcorn, regular sized corn and a variety of corn having very small kernels on miniature cobs. This smaller variety is what she...
History tells us the Welsh people were fierce warriors and even when the English built castles on their lands they had a way of rising above their would be conquerors.
As soon as spring flowers dotted the hillside beneath the shadows of the Englishmen's massive castles that could not be forcibly entered the local residents set up booths for their crafts.
The English were attracted away from their stone towers and in this way became friendly with the people. Friendly enough to...
