Sally Elizabeth Land Smith


Following a two year battle with Multiple Myeloma, Sally Elizabeth Land Smith, age 73, of Indianapolis, passed from this life at 10:05 PM on Monday, May 09, 2005.

Sally was born in Ashland, Kentucky, on July 31, 1931. She was the only child of Leonard R. and Florris Seitz Land. Sally grew up in Knightstown, Indiana, and graduated from Knightstown High School in 1948. She went on to Indiana University where she met and married Merritt W. “Redd” Smith of Plymouth, Indiana, in 1952.

Redd and Sally had two sons, Carson C. and Robin R. “Rob” Smith. The family lived at 5 E. Pine Street in Knightstown until 1961 when, following the death of Sally’s father, they moved to 7265 Sylvan Ridge Road in Indianapolis, where Redd was a Vice President in the National Accounts Division of the Indiana National Bank and, later, President and CEO of Baldwin & Lyons Insurance Company.

Sally was a member of the Indiana University Alumni Association, the Hoosier Hundred, the Woodburn Guild, the 12th Man Club, the Well House Society and Alpha Chi Omega, and enjoyed her husband’s affiliation with Highland Golf and Country Club. She was also a member the Children’s Bureau Auxiliary and St. Margaret’s Hospital Guild. She served as Chairman of the 1970 Decorators’ Show House and President of the John Strange Elementary School Parent Teacher Organization.

She is survived by her husband, Redd, sons Carson (Patty) and Rob Smith, and her three grandchildren, Sara, Alexander and Elizabeth.

Visitation and Memorial Services will be conducted in the Veterans Room and Solarium at Flanner & Buchanan of Broad Ripple, 1305 E. Broad Ripple Avenue, Indianapolis, IN 46220, phone (317) 475-4475. Calling is from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Thursday, May 12. A Memorial Service will be held the following day at 2:30 PM on Friday, May 13.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Scholarship Fund of the Knightstown High School Alumni Association, P.O. Box 121, Knightstown, IN 46148-0121, and/or to the Knightstown United Methodist Church, 27 S. Jefferson Street, Knightstown, IN 46148-1244, and/or to the charity of your choice.
