Malachi Green Rhodes


Malachi Green RHODES was born April 10, 1811 in Augusta, Richmond, GA, and died September 30, 1884 in Talladega, Co, AL. He married Mary Ann James ARRINGTON January 30, 1832 in Mobile, Alabama, daughter of Willis and Silvey ARRINGTON. Mary Ann was born May 22, 1814 in NC, and died June 16, 1883 in Talladega, Alabama. They had seven children who, in order of birth, were William J. born November 9, 1832; in Mobile Alabama; Sarah born circa 1835 in Alabama; Thomas born circa 1842 in Alabama; John Willis Rhodes, Malachi born June 19, 1846, in Columbian, Alabama; Mary born circa 1848 in Alabama; Harvey C. born circa 1851 in Alabama; and Rebecca Fanny born circa 1853 in Alabama.

Malachi Green & Mary Ann James (Arrington) RHODES were natives of GA. & N.C., respectively.

Malachi was a carriage-maker by trade. He came to Alabama & settled in Clark Co. Alabama in 1831. Shortly thereafter he moved to SW corner of St. Louis & Lawrence streets, Mobile Alabama, where he was in the carriage business until 1836. From Mobile he moved to Morgan Co., Alabama. In 1839 he moved to Talladega Alabama. He came into Talladega City in 1841, and was in the carriage business until 1855, when he engaged with the Southern Express Company, and remained with them until his death, which occurred Sept. 30, 1884. He reared five sons, four of whom were soldiers in the Confederate Army during the war. Malachi is found in Capt. Hardie's Co., Talladega Militia Home Guard as private (age over 45) muster roll. His name, his wife's name and those of his children, including their ages and places of their birth, can be found in the US Census for Talladega County, Alabama, for 1850, 1860, 1880. The US Census for Shelby County, Alabama, for 1870 states he was a carriage maker. The 1880 census for Talladega Co. #67 pg.1, s.d.2, e. d. # 132; line 1; list son Malachi Jr.; daughter Mary A. & wife Mary Ann listed as crippled. Malachi Green Sr. is shown born in Ga., His father is from Ga. & his mother from S.C., His wife, Mary Ann's father is listed being from Va. & her mother from N.C.

Malachi is buried in family cemetery with wife & some slaves in Talladega, Alabama per article found in the Surname file at Alabama State Archives written in 1955 by Mary O.M. Parker's daughter.

Malachi Green RHODES is listed in the Register of Burials of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, Talladega Station. Burial: October 01, 1884, Family Cemetery, Talladega, Alabama.
