The Family Tree - October/November 2003
Seaside Highland Games

Great News! California is getting ready to welcome the new Seaside Highland Games to its shores this October 11 & 12 at beautiful Seaside Park in Ventura, California. This all-new Scottish Festival has been on the drawing boards of John & Nellie Lowry and Jim & Marilyn Anderson for over 15 months and has grown from a modest start-up Games to a major Scottish Festival and Games through the planning period.

Seaside will host competitions in all the major competitive areas such as Scottish heavy athletics, Highland dance, Pipes and drums (both individual and pipeband competitions). Athletes of all ages and classes will compete in weights for height and distance, sheaf and caber tossing and the California Braemar Stone Championships.

There will be no lack of musical entertainment, either. Performers will include such wonderful Scottish singers as Alex Beaton, Linda Dewar and The Browne Sisters & George Cavanaugh and excellent bands such as The Wicked Tinkers, Eric Rigler & Bad Haggis, MacLear and the beautiful performing family, Celtic Spring. The LA Scots Pipeband—one of only two Grade I bands in the United States—will appear as special guests of the Seaside Games.

Bydand Forever, the Gordon Highlanders of 1882-85 from San Diego will be on hand to give demonstrations in late 19th century warfare complete with Gatling gun, cannon and authentic Martini-Henry rifles. Their encampment is always a fun and educational place to visit.

What sets The Seaside Highland Games apart is the attention being paid to individuals and families. The youngsters will have a giant Children’s Glen with numerous activities--including their own athletics--and exposures to many Scottish arts and crafts. Our Scottish Country Dancers will be housed in beautiful McBride Hall and all are welcome to enjoy their performances and then, try your hand at learning the steps. The famous Drummond Ranch Herding Dogs of Ted & Janna Ondrak will demonstrate their amazing skills on both Saturday and Sunday. Another great interest will be genealogy and tables will be hosted by expert researchers who will assist you in your quest for Scottish roots and Clan connections.

Your own Clan Association will very likely be there among the more than fifty others planning to attend. Main Street of the Fairgrounds will become a festive "Scottish tent city" for the weekend. Two of Seaside Park’s largest halls will house our forty vendors where one can purchase every type of treasure—including hard-to-find gifts for the upcoming Holidays. Naturally, Scottish food and drink is never far away.

As an approved 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation, Seaside is equipped to accept funding from many such sources as Scottish Clans and organizations and all types of businesses in need of a tax write-off. Individual and corporate sponsorships are still available, as are advertising opportunities in the beautiful Games Program for a very limited time.

Special Games accommodations may be reserved at one of our three Host Hotels and AMTRAK is offering an exclusive two-for-one fare to ride literally to our doorstep ! Come early for Friday’s Single Malt Scotch Whisky Tasting and "A Scottish Evening"—a fine buffet supper combined with musical entertainment from Alex, Linda and the Brownes and a Scottish Fashion Show! For additional information contact John Lowry at SeasideChief@aol.com or 818-886-4968.
