Gardening in America
Greenhouse, Fifty-eight dollars
by Nancy Fletcher

GreenhouseFor years we have dreamed of having a green house. Every possible design was up for study. There was the half-dug out, the very large, and the very tiny. Some were built shaped like an octagon, another was nothing more than a shed covered in plastic.

When we received the first issue of Countryside magazine, there it was. The article, "Build Your own Greenhouse for less than $100.00." What an eye catcher!.

The material and costs were:

10, 10 foot, 3/4 PVC pipe.................................................12.68

6, 3/4 PVC tee's................................................................ 1.16

2. 3/4 PVC ell's................................................................ .30

12, 3/4 metal tubing straps.................................................. 1.92

Eight Landscape timbers, cut to fit 61/2' x 15' floor........... 12.00

1, 10x25' clear plastic, 6 mil (for Oklahoma weather)...........10.97

4 1x4x8 wood framing........................................................ 9.40

2, 1x4x10 wood framing...................................................... 5.94

Assorted nails, screws, ......................................................... 3.00

10, 6'' pole barn nails............................................................. .70

Total....................................................................................58.07

GreenhouseThis is not full size but a lean to, or attached to the south side eves of our house. We used an old door on one side. The landscape timbers on the bottom have a 1'' hole drilled, 3" deep for the PVC pipe to fit there. The holes were two feet apart. The PVC was inserted into these holes, bent in a semi-circle where a PVC pipe was attached to the other end of the pipe with the 6 tees and 2 ell's which gives you eight bent PVC pipes.

The PVC pipe was attached to the eves with the 3/4 metal tubing straps over the plastic PVC pipes. The plastic rolls back over the pipe and down to the ground. GreenhouseThe plastic is attached to the landscape timbers at the bottom with a wood lathe over the plastic. The plastic is pulled around the lathe at the bottom but is one piece over the PVC pipes.

We will be doing cool weather crop there, a broccoli, cool weather lettuce, carrots, culinary herbs, turnips and whatever else that does not require a heated Green house.

Maybe next month I can send along a picture of some growing things.
