BEATON - Edinburgh to Euroa
BEATON - Edinburgh to Euroa
My Beaton ancestors motto. Fortis in Arduis (Brave in difficulties) was never a truer motto for my great great great grandparents - Six weeks into their journey to Australia their ship the India burned and the passengers were rescued hours later by a French whaling ship whose captain saw the smoke in a distance and headed straight toward it knowing it could only be another ship. The passengers were taken to Rio De Janeiro where they waited patiently for the British Govt. to send another ship (the Grindlay) to continue their journey to Victoria. Out of 195 passenger only about 150 continued to Australia, some went back to Scotland, some stayed put in Rio. 14 people died in the fire and one lady died when she either fell overboard or jumped. I created this page for a family region I went to in June 2011 in Euroa Victoria.
