Poetry of 2006/07 by Donna Flood
What the Joneses Had

It wasn’t that many years ago,
Invaders of our castle, don’t you know.
I tried my best to warn them,
“Don’t give in to that whim.”
Sure enough, they wanted what was posh.
Before you know it, “Oh my! Squash!”

It has been a tale too long to explain,
Here and now on that plain.
What the Joneses had, they thought,
Could surely, likely as not,
Be exactly what was obtainable,
For, all in all, that which was comfortable.

I felt for their weakness out there,
Had they no idea of the trial and care?
If only their psychic was reachable,
Their minds could have been moldable,
To something that was more to understand,
Of those who sit and do not stand.

The chieftain of old had wisdom to impart.
He knew the way to go, from his heart.
Against guns and numbers there was no win,
Know when to take your seat, my friend.
There are powers on high,
Who, no one can, deny.

Just because Those mighty in the sky,
Can’t be seen with the eye,
It doesn’t mean their rule is not,
On this, “Lest you forgot.”
“Touch not those of my own,” He did warn,
“Or, no way will you escape harm.”

So many times I have seen it happen, too.
And I in my minute knowledge knew
Where the great retribution did arrive.
Would that those could have remained alive,
But the justice of it had been placed in Highest hands,
So we of insignificance could not control, Those bands.
