Rodney Feeding Rhonda, 1960

Rodney Feeding Rhonda, 1960Stillwater, Oklahoma was where Rodney, my husband, was studying when this picture was taken.

Oklahoma State University may have been A&M or Agricultural and Mechanical College at the time. If it was O.S.U I'm not sure when it was changed, but around this time, 1960.

Money was close, but somehow we managed. Rodney worked for his uncle, Aaron Ross Flood who owned a cattle sales lot there. It was on Saturday only. The G.I. bill for his service in Korea was $185.00 a month. When we left Stillwater Rodney's aunt, Mary Jane Selph Flood, told me she had good reports from friends who owned businesses saying we left owing no one. We never worried about money. Nothing extra was needed other than food, fuel for the car, rent and utilities.

I was active in my faith at the time. There were only eight people involved in Bible Study in a little upstairs room. Everyone was young, modest, dedicated and content. The overseer was around fifty-five. He and his wife were frugal to a fault. They lived in a very tiny trailer house, one of those to set on two wheels. They were tiny people and ate like birds. Mr. and Mrs. Cooper were pleasant, gentle and an inspiration to young people in their fidelity and sincere need to help their fellow man.

Occasionally, we would go to another area for conventions. At that time I would sew up an outfit and sew a dress for Rhonda. I worked for a department store part time where fabric was inexpensive but of good quality. Most of the time I managed very well with what we had. Rodney's mother sewed me several attractive cotton dresses. These I wore to Bible study

Mother spent a lot of time with us and she also was a support. Her knowing how to manage helped me in great ways with recipes, sewing, and just general good habits.
