Gavin Jack


One of the most prominent stockmen in Canada is Gavin Jack, head of the Gavin Jack Commission Company, Limited, of Calgary. He has been active in this line of business since starting out in life on his own account and his present position of prominence is the result of his own intelligently directed efforts, stanch determination and close application. He was born in Berwickshire, Scotland, on the 16th of April, 1884, a son of Gavin and Elizabeth (Kerr) Jack, likewise natives of Scotland. Gavin Jack, Sr., engaged in farming for the greater part of his life in his native country, achieving substantial success. Mrs. Jack is still living, but Mr. Jack passed away in 1919.

In the pursuit of his education Gavin Jack attended the common schools of his birthplace and completed his training at George Watson College in 1904. He immediately went into the live stock commission business with Oliver & Sons of Edinburgh and remained with them two years, at the end of which time he sailed for America and located in Chicago, where he became associated with Swift & Company as cattle buyer, purchasing cattle for that well known concern in every part of the American continent. During the twelve years in which he was active in that capacity he gained invaluable experience and in 1910 he came to Calgary and embarked in business on his own account. He established the Gavin Jack Commission Company; Limited, in that year and has since been chief executive of the business. The concern is a live stock commission agent and order buyer and Mr. Jack gives his personal supervision to every department. The company has grown to be one of the representative enterprises of its kind in the province and throughout the whole of Canada. in the conduct of his business Mr. Jack has always employed the highest and most honorable principles and he is accorded the confidence and esteem of all who know him. He is a self-made man in the truest sense of the word.

In November, 1913, Occurred the marriage of Mr. Jack to Miss Alice Baxter and to their union three sons have been born Gavin, Jr., Ian and Douglas.

In his political views Mr. Jack is a Conservative, he has never sought nor desired political preferment but he is public-spirited and is ever cognizant of the duties and responsibilities as well as the privileges of good citizenship. He therefore takes an active interest in the furtherance of every movement for the benefit of the community. His religious faith is that of the Presbyterian church, and he is a member of the Board of Trade of Calgary and of the Auto Club.
