Benny Bear's Birthday Cake

Birthdays only come around once a year, but oh they are so much fun. Benny wanted his mama to make him the biggest birthday cake ever.

She mixed ten dozen eggs, fifty pounds of flour, milk, vanilla, and sugar all together in a huge bowl. She had to stand on a chair and use a shovel to stir. She stirred and stirred and stirred until it was all mixed together.

The cake took five hours to bake in the oven. When it finished baking, it sat on the kitchen table to cool down. Benny and his mama had to eat in their lunch in the living room because there was no room to sit at the table.

Benny was so excited. He wanted to eat the cake. “Mama, the cake smells so good. Can I eat it now, before you put icing on it?”

“No, no, no, Benny.” His mama chased him out of the kitchen and told him he'd have to wait until she was finished.

Mama mixed a big bowl of vanilla icing for the top. She covered the bottom layer with strawberry cream and then laid the top layer down. Though it was hard to hold the bowl, Mama poured the vanilla icing all over the top. It dripped down the side and filled the kitchen with the sweet smell of sugar. She poked candles into the cake and sprinkled decorations on top. “Benny, you can come and eat your cake now. Happy birthday!”

Benny ran into the kitchen and much to his mama's surprise, jumped right into the middle of the cake. Icing and bits of cake flew all over the room. Some landed in Mama's hair and on her face. She laughed and threw it back at Benny.

“Thank you, Mama. This is the best birthday cake I've ever had.”
