The City Moose and the Woodsy Moose

Magnus, the moose, lived in the city. He had a home and a car. He was not like other moose. Most moose live in the woods. Sometimes Magnus went to the park and sat on a swing, and other days he went to the shops to buy a pair of shoes or a few Cornish pasties and chips.

One day Lamont, Magnus's pal, came to the city to visit him. Magnus took him to the park and to the shops. They ate fish and chips and vanilla cakes.

When it was time for Lamont to go home, he said, "Magnus, why don't you come to the woods with me to visit. We can cook over an open fire and sing songs under the moon."

Magnus said, "I will! I'll come to the woods with you." Magnus drove his car to the woods and left it at the side of the road. He went with Lamont into the trees. It was dark and the moon was big and white.

Lamont lit a fire and gave Magnus a stick. "Put your marshmallows on the end of the stick and hold it over the fire."

Magnus did what Lamont told him to do. "The marshmallows are melting," he said.

"That's what they are supposed to do. Just don't let them get burnt."

An owl went hoot, hoot, hoot.

"What was that noise? I am scared," Magnus said.

"It's only an owl. There is a lot of noise in the woods. Here, have two more marshmallows." Lamont gave Magnus two hot dogs and Magnus put them on the end of his stick.

Magnus ate the gooey marshmallows and then put out the fire. He lay in his bag and saw the moon and stars. "Can we sing songs now?"

Lamont sang a song and Magnus sang with him.

"Hoot! Hoot! Hoot!"

At first Magnus was scared when he heard the noise, but then he saw the owl. "I'm not scared of an owl." He shut his eyes and went to sleep.

The next day Magnus went back to his car. "I'm going home to the city and there are no owls there." He
drove away in his car.

Lamont waved at Magnus and went back into the woods.
