King Charles Chooses Scotland to Issue Warning to Largest Company on Planet of AI Dangers

Nvidia, with a stock market valuation of $5.5 trillion (£4.1tn), has received a face-to-face warning from King Charles during a summit he organised at Dumfries House about the "existential dangers" of AI to each and everyone of us.

King Charles

Nvidia's CEO Jensen Huang joined Anthropic and OpenAI and other executives at the gathering when the King chose his words carefully when discussing artificial intelligence.

The move follows repeated warnings - from inside the industry - of how rapid developments in AI are leaving regulatory and governance moves way behind.

AI Safety Paramount

Huang said immediately afterwards companies must hold a product back, safety was paramount with constant engineering required.

AI systems required protection so that researchers, universities, start-ups and countries develop applications "none of us would have imagined alone," the BBC heard.

"Let us lead with responsible optimism, build AI safely and securely, open it to more people, expand our ambition and solve the problems that matter to the world."

Sir Demis Hassabis, co-founder of UK AI lab DeepMind, acquired by Google, was more cautious. Systems that could be as good as, or better, than humans at multiple tasks was "probably only a few short years away."

Darker Capacities

He claimed such general everyday models could have an impact "ten times that of the Industrial Revolution" but the chance of something wrong was "definitely non-zero" and required a "sensible middle way" concluding: "The future is not written yet."

King Charles said those who have created AI technologies are now increasingly warning of risks of developing "darker capacities" adding "perhaps even taking life."

There now appeared an urgency in "adequately considering the existential dangers of such technologies falling into the wrong hands and being used in potentially catastrophic ways."

The King concluded: "The task before you is not merely to advance technology but to ensure that it remains firmly in the service of humanity, community and the natural world.
