The Borders talking
newspaper is a recognised Scottish Charity. See below for news archives.
The Borders Talking newspaper is made by a team of volunteers and
currently has listeners of over 200 people in Roxburghshire,
Selkirkshire and Berwickshire.

The primary aim of the Borders Talking Newspaper is to provide 90 minute
audio cassette tapes of edited items from the Berwickshire
News and Southern
Reporter, for people
who can't see to read or can't hold a newspaper. Over 200 tapes are sent
out every week. This free service is greatly valued by listeners, to whom
the voices of the readers are friends reading the local news to them.
We have a pool of just over
70 people from which we use eight to produce each tape. The Talking
Newspaper is steered by it's founder, Matilda Mitchell, with the help of a
committee - two of whom are visually impaired - and a part time paid
organiser. Our volunteers are highly committed, many having been with the
Talking Newspaper since it started ten years ago.

Borders Talking Newspaper
offers other services to listeners, including a small library of talking
books and music tapes. We also produce about four magazine tapes annually; micellanies including interviews with Borders people, local musicians and
material provided by our own listeners.
Funding becomes more of a
problem each year and our fundraiser is constantly applying to various
grant awarding bodies. We aim to hold at least one major event each year
to boost our funds. We hope to generate regular income from putting the
written word on to tape on a commercial basis, to enable statutory and
commercial organisations to comply with the recent Disability
Discrimination Act.
At present we are hoping to
update our anolgue recording facility with a new computer based digital
system. Funds are needed to purchase a new computer capable of editing and
burning a master CD and then duplicating this on a CD copier which is also
on our shopping list.
