Moffat

The name originates from Moffat, Dumfriesshire. It is first recorded around 1245 when Nicholas de Mufet, Archdeacon of Teviotdale, was elected Bishop of Glasgow in 1258 but was never confirmed in the post, partly because he refused to pay the sum of money demanded from him by the Pope.

Descendants of an original family of Moffats still have lands in Dumfriesshire.
