(1726-83) From New Jersey, one
of Washington's major-generals. Claimed to be the Earl of Stirling and was
one of Washington's most trusted aides. His family came from SW Scotland.
He took charge of the British surrender at Yorktown. He was an astronomer
& mathematician. He was among the founders of Columbia University,
first called Kings College; also President of the St. Andrew’s Society
in New York. |
