(1814-1862) Maker of 45 caliber revolver,
Scottish on both sides. They were the standard side arms of the U.S. from
1846 to 1985. He was the founder of the great arms factory at Hartford,
Conn., and the first to lay a submarine electric cable (in 1843)
connecting New York City with stations on Fire Island and Coney Island.
