Howden, James |
| In 1854
James Howden founded the company, that more than a century later would
become Howden Group, to supply boilers and steam engines in the rapidly
developing shipbuilding industry in the West of Scotland. His invention of
the forced draught concept (preheating combustion air with the waste heat
from the flue gas and using a fan to blow it into the furnace) radically
reduced coal consumption and helped to make steam powered transatlantic
journeys a practical proposition. |
