This is a painting of the Old Jones Place as
it was around 1942
Paul Johnson coming out of
the area around Brownsville, Texas was hired to do the building work of
the ranch. The ribs of the old house now show the master builder at work.
The rocks hold fossils of a
by gone age indicating the area was covered with water at one time. The
limestone rock for the porch looked to still have water running over it.
The pattern was left from some great flood forcing its way over the rock.
The rock for the porch came from the Cotting Ranch which is about fifteen
miles away.
There was a steel link
fence around the house but it has been partially removed.
The west side of the house
was planted with a row of Rose of Sharron. There were lovely Bridal Wreath
bushes in the front.
Early on trees were scarce.
However, the changing of the ecology by the old stone wall has caused a
great overgrowth of flora. Of course, this is conducive to the collection
of the fauna also.
A climbing pink rose bush
grew over the gate which was at the end of the front walk.
There is a dangerous
situation as to the underground gasoline tank buried to the front and
right (southeast) of the house, maybe 100 feet at an 45 degree angle from
the east corner of the front porch. |
