The Osages - Sam Smith

These were the times when health could not be bought not even with the riches that oil brought to the area. Because of diabetes this lady probably lived an agony daily. Still she survived and raised her family. There are people living in Pawhuska today who remember her. She didn't let her condition keep her house bound. One gentleman remember going with her to the movie theater in order to help her with her wheelchair and her refreshments. He said it was a pleasure to him since he saw the movie and enjoyed the treats too. Are these small memories? Maybe not when they are considered by a boy whose parents too were appreciative for the care he received. Sam Smith was not free from his own problems with health. He had a rather severe speech impediment. Those who remember him in Pawhuska do speak of him with affection never seeming to dwell on the trouble he had with communication. It was known he was intelligent and a good neighbor. This seems to be the things people remember about him.
