John Lorne Mellish


J. Lorne Mellish, manager at Edmonton for Bradstreet's, has been identified with this well known commercial agency for sixteen years and has risen to his present position of responsibility through merit and ability. his birth occurred in Prince Edward Island, in 1885, and in the paternal line he is of English descent, while his maternal ancestors were natives of Scotland. He is a son of John Thomas and Margaret Ann (Johnstone) Mellish. The father was born in 1847 and died February 11, 1923. The mother is still residing in Prince Edward Island. They were married in 1880 and eight children were born to them, six sons and two daughters.

In the acquirement of an education J. Lorne Mellish attended the public schools of his native island and in 1903 he completed a course in a business college of Charlottetown. His initial experience along commercial lines was gained with a wholesale grocery firm of Charlottetown and he remained in its employ until 1906. He then went to Winnipeg, Manitoba, where he entered the service of the Bradstreet commercial agency, starting as a reporter and covering the provinces of Manitoba and Saskatchewan. For seven years he acted in that capacity and in June, 1913, recognition of his ability came in his promotion to the position of manager of the Edmonton office, of which he has since had charge. He combines a detailed knowledge of the business with executive force and is accounted one of the most capable and trustworthy representatives of the firm, to the promotion of whose interests he devotes every effort.

Mr. Mellish was married at Winnipeg, on the 16th of August, 1906, to Miss Minnie Florence Evans, a daughter of Charles Evans, a retired merchant residing in Prince Edward Island. Mr. and Mrs. Mellish have three children: Marjorie Jean, David Gordon and Margaret Florence. Mr. Mellish is an adherent of the Protestant faith, and his political support is given to the Liberal party. He is a prominent member of the Benevolent Protective Order of Elks and served as exalted ruler of Edmonton Lodge, No. 11, in 1921, and is also a Master Mason. He has worked his way steadily upward, achieving that success which is the merited reward of industry, ability and integrity, and during the period of his residence in Edmonton he has gained the sincere regard of many friends.
