As in the composition of
the following Memoirs the Author has borrowed no aid from fiction, he
trusts that the matter will make up for the manner; and, while he craves
the indulgence of the learned Reader, he hopes to obtain the mercy of
the Critic for the work of an unlettered Soldier.
