"Chilocco School: Yesterday and Today" Event in Newkirk

Preservation Oklahoma, Inc., the Newkirk Historical Society and Newkirk Main Street will host a program entitled, "Chilocco School:  Yesterday and Today."

This free event will be held Thursday, March 10, 2005:  bus tour at 4pm, speakers at 6pm. The bus tour will begin and the program will be held at 116 North Main Street, Newkirk. Please make reservations for bus tour as seating is limited.  (405/525-5325 or

Join us on a special bus tour to Chilocco. Plus, a program given by Claudine King and Donna Flood, locally noted historians and alumnae of Chilocco as they relay stories of life on the campus.

Chilocco Indian School was established in 1884 to educate children of the tribes of western Oklahoma. The school holds a prominent place in Oklahoma history, and is currently listed on Oklahoma’s Most Endangered List.

This event is a part of Preservation Oklahoma’s monthly lecture series on Oklahoma’s Most Endangered Historic Places. The Endangered Places list is a shared program of Preservation Oklahoma and the Oklahoma State Historic Preservation Office.  This list focuses attention on the challenges faced by irreplaceable historic resources across Oklahoma.

Preservation Oklahoma is the statewide nonprofit membership organization that works to encourage the preservation of Oklahoma’s historic places.
