As you can see below, Mr. Jim Gabbert of the Oklahoma State Historic Preservation Office has just been informed that CHILOCCO has been included in the National Register of Historic Places as of last Friday!

This is exciting news and is the completion of the first major step towards the preservation of this historic site. While it has been a personal mission of mine to see this happen, it would not have happened without the work, support, and belief of Preservation Oklahoma and its board and executive director Heather Siefert, without the support and nomination preparation of Jim Gabbert of the SHPO and their whole organization, without the support and work of the Confederated Chilocco Tribes, without the work and support of the Chilocco Alumni Association, and without the work and support of many other people in Kay County and across the United States. Congratulations to you all for this achievement!

I am optimistic that in addition to this recognition, Chilocco will also be listed as a National Historic Landmark, which is a listing of the most singificent historic places in the United States - the cream of the crop so to speak!

Preservation OKlahoma will be sending out a press release soon for publication.

Just got notice - Chilocco was listed i nthe National Register as of 9/8/06.  At the National Level of significance.
The National Register will forward it to the National Historic landmarks staff for further review to determine if they want to pursue NHL status.
