Fleecy Baby Blankets

I'm never ceased to be amazed at what designers do with fabric. There are stacks of this at Wal-Mart. It has a fleecy, soft, cuddly kind of feel which is perfect for a newborn baby.  The fabric is wide so you can get two small blankets out of just one,  yard. If you wish to make a blanket for a larger child you can do this with a yard and a half. Older children love the warm feeling they get when covered with this. What is amazing is that it doesn't have to be hemmed. If you so desire you can cut fringes on the edges and it makes a cute blanket. The colors, too, are special for children. The yarn fringe can be easily slipped onto the fabric. For tiny babies  weaving of the fringe makes for less bit of tickle for them. The fabric washes well and is dried fluffy in a dryer.

The material is tightly woven so I use an awl to punch holes around it, stretching the hole so it is possible to use a crochet hook to pull the yard through. There is no end of combinations and colors you can put together for fun creations. I make the length of the fringe about 24 inches and measure three or four strands, double it in half and tie a half hitch knot in is after I have pulled it through.

When you get into the swing of it, with practice,  it is possible to turn one out in a day. These white ones were 4.44 a yard and I got two out of one yard. For the yarn, I buy a color co-ordinated one for a couple dollars, or less. The larger skeins have plenty thread and are,  the safest yarns to buy. For a variegated mixed colored edge use left over fringe. A penny saved is a penny earned. Your gift will be a lovely little warm blanket and at only less than five dollars. I challenge you to buy one for anything less than 29 dollars for something this attractive.
