Forbes DNA Project

I am the FORBES Genealogy by DNA Project administrator.  The surname project links members of our clan who share our common surname. Participants are males* with the surname FORBES, or variant spelling, who seek to check their paternal line for genetic matching of the Y chromosome.  We started the group to broaden our knowledge of our unique and ancient Scottish heritage.  We invite you to join with us.  http://www.familytreedna.com/public/forbes/

My personal objective is to authenticate my relationship to James Forbes (c.1635-1692) of Hartford, Connecticut. The aim is to find genetic matches to males with a clear, and to others with a not so clear, line of descendancy from James. The paper trail of my research makes use of circumstantial evidence between my 4th and 5th great-grandfathers. The genetic match would solidify the connection.  These personal goals supplement the corporate goals of the project.  I will list them here.

FORBES DNA Project Goals

1.) Gain insight into the origin of the surname Forbes.

2.) Establish or estimate the number of different ancestral lines found among FORBES families worldwide.

3.) Trace currently known and unknown FORBES lineages to common ancestors in the United Kingdom, Ireland, and English colonies, past and present.

4.) Assist genealogy researchers in identifying and validating their immigrant FORBES ancestor and/or remotest FORBES ancestor through the 25 Marker test.

5.) Ancillary goals involve collaboration with other DNA Projects:

a. investigate genetic connections to clan septs; [Bannerman, Berrie, Berry, Boyce, Boyes, Lumsden, Macouat, Macowatt, MacQuattie, MacWatt, Mechie, Mekie, Meldrum, Michie, Middleton, Walter, Walters, Watson, Watt, Watters, Wattie, Watts]

b. investigate genetic connections to the URQUHART and MACKAY projects to see if there are genetic matches. Historical documents speak of the common origin of the Forbes, MacKay, and Urquhart families.

Surnames in Project

FAUBUS, FOBES, FORBES, FORBESS, FORBIS, FORBISH, FORBUS, FORBUSH, FORDICE, FORDYCE, FURBUSH

You will find the program of value to your family heritage research.  It gives you the opportunity to see your place in the greater FORBES community.  Please consider joining our group and passing this information onto other FORBESes.

Aye and Best Regards,

Ken Forbes
Puyallup, Washington

*Women can have their brother, uncle, cousin or other male of their lineage tested for the program.  Only non-coding or ‘junk DNA’ is used. It has no medical value. It will not identify you as an individual, and the tests are not as discriminating as a standard ‘forensic’ profile used by the police.
