Variants , Hadden , Haldean, Halden, Haldenby.An old personal surname meaning, ' Half-Dane.' This name is of Scottish descent and is found in many ancient manuscripts in the above country. Examples of such are a Halden filius Eadulf was one of the witneses to Earl David's inquisition into the territorial possessions of the church of Glasgow in 1124 and a Haldene was steward of Earl Waldeve in the year 1178. Names were recorded in these ancient documents to make it easier for their overlords to collect taxes and to keep records of the population at any given time. When the overlords acquired lands by either force or gifts from their rulers, they created charters of ownership for themselves and their vassals. Other examples of this name were found in the person of Roger Haldane who in 1255 was granted sixty acres of lands outside the Castle of Scardeburc and a distinguished bearer of the name was Richard Durdon Haldane (1856-1928) who was the first Viscount of Haldane.
