Donna Flood
Finding Heart
Cayuga Street, Dallas, 1966

Cayuga Street, Dallas, 1966This snapshot is too small and not clear. The way it speaks of the time around the little family makes it worth saving. Sunday morning finds the two families of the Epperson's and the Flood's making their way with the children to services.

Rhonda on the left can hardly be seen. She has been playing with her two cousins.

For anyone who had doubted the benefit she would bring to her family was acted out in an instant. The older of the two cousins was in Rhonda's bedroom playing. All at once Rhonda was yelling at the top of her voice for someone to "hurry, come here."

When we Mother's rushed to them there was Rhonda holding onto the skirt of the little girl with all her might. Her one good hand was clamped onto the dress in an unbreakable grip.

The little girl was all but pulling her across the floor as she attempted to jab a hair pin into the electrical outlet. Not until the little girl was stopped by her mother did Rhonda release her hold on the fabric of her dress.

There was no doubt as to the awareness Rhonda had of what was happening. Her face and eyes were a picture of terror. No one ever doubted what worth she had to the family after that incident.
