Favourite Children's Poems of W. Neil Fraser
A Selection of Shorter Poems
By Ogden Nash

The Parsnip

The parsnip, children, I repeat
Is simply an anemic beet.
Some people call the parsnip edible;
Myself, I find this claim incredible.

Celery

Celery, raw,
Develops the jaw,
Bur celery, stewed,
Is more quietly chewed.

The Absentees

I'd ride a cock horse to Banbury Cross
For giblet gravy and cranberry sauce,
Two treats which are held in reserve by the waiter
Till you've finished your turkey and mashed potater.

Song of the Open Road

I think that I shall never see
A billboard lovely as a tree.
Indeed, unless the billboards fall
I'll never see a tree at all.
