Children's Poems
by Margo Fallis
Get off my Back

Bibsy the turtle lay on the sand.
“Being a turtle, really is grand.
I can lie here all day and soak up the sun;
Yes, being a turtle can be quite fun.”

As the day passed on it became rather hot.
“I think I’ll go in and have a swim; that hits the spot.”
Into the water he went and it felt so good
That Bibsy swam around and was in a great mood.

Fish came by to see what Bibsy was doing.
They wouldn’t leave him alone; they kept on pursuing.
“Go away you fish. I’m here to have a swim.”
But they kept darting back and forth all around him.

They blew bubbles near his nose; they blew them near his feet;
They blew bubbles in his turtle shell and that felt sort of neat,
But Bibsy wanted them to go, he was here to relax.
“I’m a turtle, not a fish. Have you mixed up your facts?”

If that wasn’t bad enough, a butterfly so pink
Landed on his back. “You know what I think?
I’m going to go back and lie on the beach.
That way I’ll be left alone and out of your reach.”

So Bibsy made a sigh and plodded onto the sand.
He lay down behind a rock to get a nice suntan.
But the butterfly found him and landed on his shell.
“I guess it won’t hurt,” he said, “Oh well. Oh well.”
