Lismore Recordings

Established in 1973.

Lismor has 450 'master' albums in the archive and 250 of these are still on general sale throughout the world.

The company specialises in traditional Scottish music in all of it's forms, from simple acoustic solo harp or oral tradtional song through to techno-influenced folk music of today, producing, preserving and promoting the music to the world.

Lismor is the world's leading label for bagpipe music having recorded every World Pipe Band Championship winning band from the last 30 years (bar one).

The label also promotes the very finest in solo bagpiping via a series entitled "The World's Greatest Pipers", currently at Volume 14, besides the 'progressive' piping of Robert Mathieson, Fred Morrison and Michael Grey.

Music Publishing arm 'ISA Music' has published Seventeen books of pipe music featuring the best of traditional and contemporary composition.

Kenneth McKellar, Moira Anderson, Andy Stewart, The Alexander Brothers and more of the most popular 'music hall/variety' artists have numerous albums on the label. Their popularity generates sales that permits the company to 'preserve' much more of the musical history from the past, so the archive
also holds albums by Jeannie Robertson, Lizzie Higgins, The Stewarts of Blair and Andy Hunter among the oral tradition singers.

Scottish country dance, fiddle, Regimental Pipe Bands, Gaelic song, pipe band Drumming and the 'classical' Piobaireachd are constant features throughout the catalogue.

The 'best sellers' are 'The Corries' and 'Runrig' - what a surprise!!

In 1990 Lismor bought over the rights to IONA Records.

Iona Records was set up as a vehicle to promote the classic folk band 'Ossian' and has since added strong folk-rock elements via 'Wolfstone', 'Rock Salt & Nails', 'Tartan Amoebas' and techno-folk maestro Paul Mounsey with his 'Nahoo' project.

The Iona Records label also pioneered 'importing' of Celtic talent into Scotland with several critically acclaimed albums by artists from the Maritimes (Barachois/Richard Wood), especially Cape Breton (The Barra MacNeils/Mary  Jane Lamond), Asturia in Northern Spain (Llan de Cubel), Canada (Mad Pudding/Oliver Schroer) and cajun (Wayne Toups) from Louisianna.

Eric Clapton and Jethro Tull crop up on Iona, as do Nanci Griffith, Ricky Skaggs, Eddi Reader and, on Iona Gold, the new rock talents of 'Love and Money', 'The Pearlfishers', Carol Laula and the wonderfully manic 'Humpff Family' also achieved great critical acclaim.

Lismor and Iona have pioneered much that is now taken for granted by other labels and artists alike...and remains very much at the forefront of all that is happening in Scottish music especially through the major distribution set-up at "Mac Distribution" and the major 'ground breaking'
music site at <www.scottish-irish.com> where the target is to list every Scottish and Irish traditional music CD currently available - AND list every tune AND 'every player including Guests'.
