Dearly we loved you, our gay,
bonny Highlanders;
Loudly we cheered as you marched bravely by;
Graham and Macintosh, Stuart and Davidson—
“Here come the Kilties, hurrah!” was the cry,
Oh, ’twas skirl of the pipe and the gleam of the feather,
Wave of the tartan and march, lads, together.
Deeply we grieve for you, true-hearted Highlanders,
Sadly we mourn that you come not again;
Campbell and Fraser, Macdonald and Patterson,
Brave Forty-eighth, we must wait you in vain.
Oh, ’twas scream of the shell and flash of the sabre,
Stand for the Empire and die, lads, together.
