Variants Hope, Hopewell.Meaning 'at the hope', a locational name from a sloping hollow between two hills. Variants Hopes, Hopping.This name is of Anglo-Saxon descent spreading to the Celtic countries of Ireland, Scotland, and Wales in early times and is found in many mediaeval manuscripts throughout the above islands. Examples of such are a Roger de la Hope, from County Herefordshire, who was recorded in the 'Hundred Rolls', in the Year 1273, and a Alicia de Hope, who was recorded in the 'Poll Tax', of the West Riding, of Yorkshire, England, in the Year 1379.A John atte Hope, County Somerset, was recorded in 'Kirby's Quest', in the reign of Edward III. In Scotland a John Hope, from Peeblesshire rendered his homage, in the Year 1296, and a John Hoip, was recorded on the lands of Kelso Abbey, in the Year 1567.
