Scottish Wedding Guide
The Rings

It is customary for the engagement ring not to be worn publicly until the engagement is announced.  Diamonds are still a popular choice for engagement rings.  It is said that a diamon, the hardest and most lustrous gem, will make people lucky in love as well as strong and courageous. Presumably because men are already thought of as courageous they do not normally wear diamon engagement rings.

Wedding rings are normally made of gold, one of the world's most precious metals.  It is the best man's responsibility to ensure that the ring is kept safe on the day of the wedding until it is required at the ceremony. The wedding ring is worn on the third finger of the left hand because the Romans believed that a nerve led from this finger straight to the heart, the seat of love and faithfulness.
