Bella Vista Lyrics and other poems
Milkin' Time

Hear the cow bell jinglin'.
See them windin' down the trail,
Milk maid waits a tinglin'
   To fill a foamin' pail.

Callin' to ol' Bossie
   To hurry from the wood,
While behind old Flossie
   Keeps chewin' uv her cud.

Keeps stealin' tender grasses
   As they move along,
Through the shady passes,
   Not knowin' any wrong.

Kept a movin' to the measure
   Of the jinglin' bell,
Thinkin only of the pleasure
   For them at the well.

Kept the oaken bucket bringin'
Ice cold water from the well,
Sent it many times a swingin'
   An' splahin' as it fell.

See the maiden pour the water
   Into an oaken trough;
Till it seemd the cows had "orter'
   Surely to have had enough.

An' while the shadders flect 'em
   Where stanchioned by the maidl
Then she milked while children dect 'em
   With daisies from the glade.

Put the milk in earthern measure
Placed it in an icy rill
In the milkhouse where the treasure
Could be drunken there at will.
