Fall's Deception

Step from rock to rock
Knowing moss has grabbed them in a lock
Slimed and green makes the trek insecure
Twist our foot on each to avoid the lure
Of  lost balance and into the brink
And all as quick as a wink.
Like this fall season of beauty that holds
No warning as forward time unfolds
When ice and snow cuts through our breath
Leaving us all bereft
Of composure, solid stability
But in shivering awareness will have lost secure ability.
This is the true goblin of October,
The fear of what might come through a night clear,
This knowledge of reality for the season and time of year,
The coming witches of screeching winds,
Will leave us clinging for warmth from friends.
Those ancestors had no textbook of psychiatry,
In weakness had to have some way to set their mind free,
From being fooled by the whimsical falling of a leaf,
To  believe in this beauty to last, free from grief,
Would it last forever?
No never, nevermore, no never.
Make fun of it, we in our lack of respect,
For suffering and despair will reflect
On bats, ghouls, ghosts and derelict.
It's just the way of our world,
Little time have we for extra thinking hurled.
Fiddle or play the lyre while she did burn
Teach the children our ways don't let them learn.
Stop their minds quickly in stale tradition
Worry not that their future might have ancestor's contrition.
