Instructions for Sewing a Simple Gown

Depending on what you spend on sleeping gowns this simple pattern I designed will save a bundle of money on these. Plus if it is just cut short it also makes a great blouse pattern. The blouse can be worn under a tailored suit with a matching scarf of the same fabric.

Shop for the fabric wherever you can find fine fabric on sale. Knit material is what you will use. Often splashy bright fabrics will be on sale because no one has a use for them. The fabric is good just the
pattern is too bold. This will do nicely for gowns for around the house and at night for sleeping.

Instructions:

Measure across your shoulders from the middle of your upper arms across.

Measure the length you want the gown.

Cut two rectangles this size. Sew the two together from the bottom on one side up to where the arm opening is. On the other side sew from the arm opening down to where you want the slit to start on the leg. This just helps for easier walking, but is attractive too.

Start hemming around the top parts of the rectangles. After you have the edges hemmed find a comfortable place on your shoulders where you would like the top part of the garment to hang. Pin one part of the hemmed top there and slip the gown over your head to see if you have the small seam in the right place for a neck opening.

Sew about a one inch seam. Triple sew it for a strong seam. Hem the bottom and where you have left an opening for the slit.
