Scottish Language goes all 'Digital Native'
Chapter 3 - Scottish to Digital Glossary


From Scottish terms named 'Word of the Year' by prestigious dictionaries published on both side of the Atlantic, to formally describing computer coding of cryptocurrency transactions, onto memes of cartoon charaters widely used on the likes of TikTok, and referring to obsolete technology, the language displays a versatility second to none.

"Auld" -- "Auld Tech" refers to outdated or old fashioned technology like rotary phones and floppy disks, also in cybersecurity standing for Advanced Persistant Threats Unsupervised Learning Detection an algorithmic framework scanning logs of DNS data aimed at spotting hidden and malicious hacker domains, reports the US National Institutes of Health; the term derivesfrom "Auld Lang Syne" meaning "old time since" popularised by National Bard Rabbie Burns; also Auld Reekie, historic name for Scotland's Capital City Edinburgh, also the Auld Enemy, traditional term used in history and especially referring to a rival nation usually England when it involves football.

"Hoolie" -- Silicon Valley's fandom wiki innovative technology, also name of the main fictional tech giant and primary rival in popular HBO comedy series parody of Google, Apple, Microsoft and Oracle, and the Hooley "Seven Cs of Digital Literacy" represents a widely used model used to evaluate and build on individual online skills for career development; Collins Dictionary defines the term as slang for a rough and lawless hooligan it can also mean according to Wiktionary a noisy celebration or party, also a strong wind or gale as in "blowing a hoolie" with a BBC iPlayer describing it as Scotland's biggest night of traditional traditional dance and music.

"Doot" -- Named Dictionary.com 2025 word of the year, prominent in general internet culture and used throughout the internet as an onomatopoeic sound linked to viral audio and memes, reports Pinterest; traditionally spelling and pronunciation of word "doubt", as Merriam-Webster puts it "a Scottish variant of doubt.

"Ussy" -- Named American Dialect Society word of the year 2022, especially social media sites like TikTok used by those labelled as "chronically online" plus memes about cartoon characters used widely on the likes of TikTok; Urban Dictionary describes it as an "informal suffix" used to describe the soul, passion or strength of someone's effort in work of art.

"Ether" -- Techies common phrase "disappeared into the ether", also inspired Ethernet and the Ethereum computer-coded cryptocurrency and blockchain networks as a digital currency for payments, investment asset and transaction fee payment, the latter Wikipedia describes as a dencentralised functionality with abbreviation ETH; slang for ruthlessly humiliating and insulting an opponent for example by one rapper to another, more generally Wikipedia notes to "ether"someone to permanently damage one's reputation or career with an overwhelming counterattack.

"Tattie Bogle" -- Refers to old, obsolete technology such as the Xbox 360 controller driver for the Mac OS X as part of digital legacy that nevertheless remains a well known term used by retro-gamers; tradition word for a scarecrow ie combining potato and ghost or goblin with Collins Dictionary elaborating it also means a person or a thing that appears frightening but not necessarily harmful, an untidy-looking person or a very thin person.
