Scottish Language goes all 'Digital Native'
Chapter 4 - Hi Head Yin


Here, the language is extensively employed to reference particular digital curved designs and other aspects of word art full of built-in text effects, to various video imaging, onto formal business and gaming branding, and how posts are connected millions of times daily.

"Hi Heid Yin"--Metaphor for tech leadership as in a high-skilled person with Bloomberg Business telling us via TikTok potentially "huge fortunes await you" working for a startup for one of the booming AI giants and The Glasgow Herald highlighting the term as "the boss" covering someone in authority.

"Thon" -- "Datathon" analyzing and integrating large datasets, "edit-a-thon" people joining together to edit Wikipedia usually on a specific topic, "prompt-a-thon" to sharpen AI writing skills like Microsoft 365 Copilot; Wikipedia also describes it as an academic rank similar to a university don, usually used for fundraising events like a Telethon or Walkathon.

"Threid" -- In X (formerly Twitter) a series of connected posts or a small sequence of programmed instructions also a wireless method to connect smart home devices like video streaming involving a low-power mesh network meant for small gadgets like smart bulbs, reports TechTarget; in Scots it represents a threared insert, bushing or nut as a fastener element inserted into an object adding a threaded hole.

"Henchman" — Social media term employed in several distinct forms ranging from business branding to cultural references in gaming and memes including humorous, viral content and cyber surveillance; Dictionaries of the Scots language describes "hanchman" as a "personal attendant" or "right-hand man" of a Highland Chief, a trusty follower or bodyguard dating back to the 1730s.

"Hoachin'" -- Commonly used on platforms like Instagram accompanied by videos/images showing crowded scenes and TikTok in South Korea describes the term as "it's absolutely hoachin outside"; the BBC reports the Oxford English Dictionary is "hoaching" with "new" Scottish words, although many go way back in terms of usage describes the term as "crowded, swarming or thronging"

"Curling" -- A "curling digital word" refers to creating text curved or shaped used in digital designs, printables, word art in programs like Word, Canva, Photoshop with built-in text effects from sites like Etsy; curling known as "the roaring game" due to the sound the granite stones make as they sweep across ice and Scottish Curling runs a wide range of competitions and events for all ages with the pastime stretching back to 16th century activity on frozen lochs and ponds.
